A North Augusta man was killed and a probation officer was hospitalized after a shooting in a probation office in downtown Augusta on Monday, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.

Travis Berrian, 29, of North Augusta, was killed during the struggle, according to Pat Morgan, a spokesman for GBI. The incident happened about 4:30 p.m.

Berrian, who was on probation for an aggravated assault in Richmond County, was called to the Augusta Probation Office on Greene Street because he was wanted on a murder warrant in Statesboro, Ga., Morgan said

“Statesboro had been in contact with Richmond County. At some point, the probation office reached out to him,” Morgan said. “When he came in and reported, because there was an outstanding warrant, they were going to arrest him. At some point, they were going to secure him in handcuffs and he began struggling with the officers. At some point, there were two shots fired.”

During the struggle, Berrian and the probation officer, Sherrill Warren, were struck, Morgan said. He could not comment where each person was struck.

Warren was taken to Georgia Regents Medical Center and is expected to make a full recovery, Morgan said.

Morgan said Berrian did have a concealed weapon on him at the time of the incident, and the officers were also armed; however, he could not comment whose gun fired the shots.

Morgan said Berrian’s address was listed as Augusta, but his mother lives in North Augusta. It is not known which address Berrian had been using.
