A Beech Island man is dead after succumbing to injuries he suffered during a hit-and-run incident early on Saturday morning, according to the Aiken County Coroner.

Robert Brooks, 48, was pronounced dead on Sunday afternoon at Georgia Health Sciences University.

Coroner Tim Carlton reported Brooks was attempting to aid a motorist on Saturday who had run out of gas by transporting her to the gas station when the Moped he was operating was struck from behind by another vehicle.

Sandra Huntington, 39, of Beech Island was arrested on Saturday afternoon in connection to the incident. She has been charged with two counts of leaving the scene of an accident resulting in great bodily injury, according to S.C. Highway Patrol.

The incident happened at about 12:30 a.m. on Pine Log Road near Russell Hills in Aiken, according to Highway Patrol.

Both vehicles were heading south when the Moped was struck.

S.C. Highway Patrol’s Multi-Disciplinary Accident Investigation Team is investigating the crash. An investigation by the Aiken County Coroner’s Office is ongoing.

The condition of the passenger on the Moped, Kathrine Bentley, 32, of Windsor, is unknown at this time.
