Ryan's Downtown Market and Deli has closed.

The downtown eatery shut its doors about week ago but officially announced on Thursday that the business was closed for good.

A letter posted on the business' door from owners Cutter and Hayes Mitchell thanks the Aiken community for its support and reads, “While we're saddened to see this chapter in our lives come to a close, we are, at the same time, excited to see what lies ahead.”

It further reads that while they're moving on to “other endeavors” the Mitchell brothers appreciate the encouragement from their customers, downtown merchants and others over the three and a half years they were in business.

“Downtown is a great asset to Aiken,” the letter concluded. “We hope that Aiken will continue to support the many great business[es] that remain.”

Ryan's Downtown Market and Deli opened in the spring of 2010 on Laurens Street where the former Sweet Cow Creamery was once located. The Mitchell brothers modeled and named their deli after a similar business that was started by a family member in the 1920s. Their great-grandfather, Ralf Ryan, opened Ryan's Market with his brother Carmi in Vermont in 1923.

The downtown business served freshly-made deli sandwiches and carried a variety of specialty cheeses, beer and wine, special order meats and more.

Though the restaurant has closed, the business' deli cart seems to still be in service, according to another note taped to the door. To follow the deli cart, visit www.facebook.com/ryansdelicart.

Efforts to reach owner Cutter Mitchell were not successful before press time.
