Man arrested in downtown assault case

Police arrested an Aiken man in connection with an assault on a young woman that happened downtown on July 12.

Derek Randolph Brooks, 38, was charged with attempted murder, kidnapping and first-degree criminal sexual conduct. He was placed in the Aiken County detention center, where he remained on Tuesday afternoon.

The incident happened about 2:50 a.m. July 12 near the intersection of Newberry Street and Park Avenue, police said. The 22-year-old victim left a downtown establishment and was walking alone when she was assaulted by a man who was walking behind her, police said.

The man reportedly did not have a weapon and used only his hands, police said.

Police have not commented on the extent of the woman's injuries but said she was “struck in the head.”

Investigators have received assistance with the case from the Aiken County Sheriff's Office, the Second Judicial Circuit Solicitor's Office, North Augusta Public Safety, the S.C. Law Enforcement Division and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives' RAGE Task Force.

The investigation is ongoing, and anyone with information about this crime is asked to call CrimeStoppers of the Midlands at 888-CRIME-SC. Callers can remain anonymous and will be eligible for a cash reward of between $50 and $1,000.
