Aiken Public Safety investigators have arrested a man in connection to an assault that occurred downtown on July 12.
Derek Randolph Brooks, 38, has been charged with attempted murder, kidnapping and first degree criminal sexual conduct in the incident.
The incident began when a 22-year-old female victim was assaulted at about 2:50 a.m. July 12 near the intersection of Newberry Street and Park Avenue, according to police.
Police said that the victim left a downtown establishment and was walking alone when she was assaulted by a man who was walking behind her. The man reportedly did not have a weapon and used only his hands. The victim was able to go to another establishment to call police.
Police did not comment then on the extent of her injuries, but said “she was struck in the head.”
Investigators received assistance in this case from the Aiken County Sheriff's Office, the Second Circuit Solicitor's Office, North Augusta Public Safety, the State Law Enforcement Division and the ATF RAGE Task Force.
