A Williston man's body was recovered this morning from the Edisto River after he did not return home from a fishing trip Wednesday, Aiken County Coroner Tim Carlton said.

John Champy Sr., 81, and his boat were found about 4 a.m., two miles upriver from the Veterans Road boat landing, Carlton said.

The search for Champy began when he did not return home Wednesday. Family members, residents and the Williston Rescue and Department of Natural Resources were part of the search, Carlton said.

The cause and manner of death are pending investigation by the Aiken County Coroner's Office and the Department of Natural Resources.

An autopsy is scheduled this morning in Newberry. No foul play is suspected at this time, the coroner said.
