The Aiken Department of Public Safety is investigating an armed robbery at a store on Richland Avenue late Thursday night.

The incident happened at Murphy Oil about 11:40 p.m., according to a report. The store clerk told officers that a black man appearing to be in his mid- to late-20s entered the store, wearing a black hooded sweatshirt with the hood up. The clerk described him as about five-foot-eight inches tall, 180 pounds with black hair and brown eyes, police said.

The suspect went to the counter and grabbed the clerk's shirt, pulling him close and keeping his right hand in the pocket of the jacket, according to the report.

"The subject then told (the victim) that he had a gun, and that he would kill him if he did not give him all the money in the register," the report stated. The suspect reportedly kept his right hand in the pocket the entire time, but the victim never saw a gun.

The victim complied and turned over an unknown amount of cash to the suspect, who then fled on foot, according to the report.

Officers arrived on scene and searched for the suspect but were unsuccessful. They were able to obtain video recorded by the store's security cameras.
