Despite the stormy weather, construction of the new Sam’s Club hasn’t slowed, and the retail store is still on track to open in October.
Crews have been working steadily to construct the store located at 220 Jefferson Davis Highway, and several people have already been employed by the Aiken Sam’s Club.
According to Spokeswoman Laura Ladd Poff, 70 associates have been hired, and Sam’s Club is looking for about 100 additional employees.
Sam’s Club Membership and Hiring Center, which opened in May, is also offering $40 gift cards to anyone signing up for Plus membership and a $20 gift card to those purchasing a basic membership, Poff added.
Plans for the Sam’s Club site include ways to abate drainage issues, which has been a topic of concern as places around the CSRA have experienced flooding during these past few rainy months. According to the County Planning Department, a large retention pond is going between the two driveways off Jefferson Davis Highway in front of the store. Another small retention pond is located near the entrance off Robert M. Bell Parkway.
A retaining wall has also been constructed on the hill behind the vacant Dick Smith car dealership on the corner of Jefferson Davis Highway and Robert M. Bell Parkway.
Currently, the nearest Sam’s Club is located in Augusta on Bobby Jones Expressway.
Sam’s Club was founded in 1983 and is the eighth largest retailer in the United States with nearly 600 locations across the country.
The membership and hiring center is located at 156 University Parkway in Suites 101-103. It’s open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday. People also can apply for jobs online at www.SamsClub.com/careers.
