CHARLESTON — This year’s Spoleto Festival USA in Charleston took in nearly $3 million at the box office.

The festival also said on Wednesday that about 63,000 tickets were sold for the 160 events staged during the 17-day run of the festival.

Festival officials said Spoleto means about $50 million in economic impact for the Charleston area.

The festival was created in Charleston in 1977 by the late composer Gian Carlo Menotti as a companion to his Festival of Two Worlds in Spoleto, Italy.

This year’s Spoleto Festival USA concluded Sunday evening with fireworks following a concert by the Red Stick Ramblers – a Cajun, honky-tonk and swing ensemble – at Middleton Place Plantation.
