SMS Sportsworld, located on E. Pine Log Road in Aiken, is set to close by the end of June, according to store owner Bobby Sheridan.

The sports retailer has been in Aiken since February 2009, but changing market conditions lead to the decision to shut the doors at the end of the month.

“It was a combination of trying to decide what to do with it and then we found out Academy Sports was coming in. That pretty much sealed it,” Sheridan said.

Last year, Academy Sports and Outdoors, a retailer which operates about 150 stores across the Southeastern United States, announced plans to open a new location at Hitchcock Plaza off Silver Bluff Road in Aiken.

“The bigger slice of the pie is going to go to Academy and everybody else's is going to get smaller,” Sheridan said.

SMS Sportsworld also has stores in North Augusta, Orangeburg and Manning. The North Augusta store, which Sheridan also owns, will remain open.

He said the merchandise in the E. Pine Log Road store will be moved to another shop in Savannah, Ga., but that it will not be a new SMS location.

Currently, the Aiken location is holding a moving sale with clothing items, equipment and shoes all on clearance.

Aiken resident Bennie Glover, who visited the store on Wednesday, said he was disappointed to hear it was closing, especially since he likes to buy college sports apparel.

“I'm sad to see it go,” Glover said.
