Man arrested for possession of crack

An Aiken man was detained for possession of crack cocaine following a traffic stop on Laurens Street on Tuesday, according to the Aiken Department of Public Safety.

Calvin Bernard Tyler, 32, of Union Street, was also charged with an open container of beer and placed in the Aiken County detention center, where he remained on Tuesday afternoon.

The incident happened about 1 a.m. on Tuesday, according to a report. Officers saw a vehicle fleeing from an area on Fairfield Street where a large group of people was seen standing in the area. After a short pursuit, the vehicle stopped on Laurens Street near Cushman Drive.

Inside the vehicle, officers found two adult occupants and a 2-year-old child sleeping in the back seat and not buckled in, according to the report. The driver of the vehicle appeared to be nervous and repeatedly told the officer not to take her to jail.

The driver admitted to not having a driver’s license, according to the report. She said there was nothing illegal in the car but said she believed the passenger may have something illegal. She added that he called her to pick him up from Fairfield Street and take him to Shiloh Heights.

While Tyler was stepping out of the vehicle so officers could search it, an open beer can fell out and onto the ground, according to the report. While Tyler was being frisked, officers found a small plastic bag continuing five “powdery rock-like” substances.

Tyler was taken into custody, and the female driver was cited for a child restraint violation and no driver’s license.
