A 19-year-old Johnston man, who was the passenger in the rear seat of a vehicle, died early Saturday morning from severe head trauma, the result of a single vehicle collision, according Aiken County Coroner Tim Carlton.
Ricky Marquez Hammonds, was pronounced dead at the scene of the incident at approximately 2 a.m., after the vehicle in which he was a passenger left the roadway and struck several trees, Carlton said.
The deceased was not wearing a seat belt, and was ejected from the vehicle, a late model Toyota Camry, Carlton said. The vehicle had been traveling southbound on Coleman Bridge Road, near Ott Dale Drive in Aiken County, when the incident occurred.
The driver of the vehicle, Calvin Edwards, 40, of Aiken, and the front seat passenger, were both wearing their seat belts, and were transported to Georgia Regents University Medical Center, where they were treated for non-life threatening injuries, according to reports.
Edwards told authorities he wasn't sure what caused the crash, but believes it may have been a tire blowout, officials said.
The S.C. Highway Patrol Department and the Aiken County Coroner's Office are investigating the crash.
