The South Carolina USTA Adult League State Championship got underway in Aiken Saturday. This years’ tournament consists of players at the 2.5-5.0 skill level.
One of the Aiken Representatives, A Team, took to the courts at H. Odell Weeks Tennis Center for a Match with TNT.
TNT got the upper hand in all of the matches except for Viet Nguyen’s win for A Team. Nguyen won his match in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3.
Tournament organizers have been pleased with the start of the tournament.
“Aiken is a wonderful place to be holding the event, and we’ve got some great tennis being played,” Mary Goins, South Carolina director of leagues for the USTA, said. “We hope to have the event here for many years to come.”
The players also spoke fondly of the event. Julie Miller, a member of Sparks, out of Hilton Head, picked up a 6-0, 6-1 victory and after her match she was not only pleased with the outcome but also her experience so far.
“This is my first time playing in the state championships, and it’s just an outstanding experience,” she said. “ Plus, I got to come to Aiken for the first time, and I got a win, so it’s going good.
The tournament will continue today with matches in various locations.
A Team is scheduled to be in action again today at 12:30 p.m. This time, the squad will be facing the Tennisholics from Rock Hill at the USC Aiken tennis complex.
