A 19-year-old Johnston man is dead following a one-car crash early Saturday morning.

Ricky Marquez Hammonds was pronounced dead at the scene on Coleman Bridge Road near Ott Dale Drive at around 2 a.m., according to Aiken County Coroner Tim Carlton.

Hammonds was a passenger in a late model Toyota Camry when the vehicle, traveling at a high rate of speed, left the roadway and struck several trees, Carlton said. The coroner said Hammonds was not wearing a seatbelt and died from a severe head injury.

The driver and the front seat passenger, who both were wearing seat belts, were transported to Georgia Regents University with non-life threatening injuries, Carlton said.

The driver of the vehicle, Calvin Edwards, 40, of Aiken reported he was not sure what caused the crash, but believes it was due to a tire blowout, the coroner said.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol and the Aiken County Coroner's Office are investigating the crash.
