The old Hickman Mill plant in Graniteville will soon be transformed into a state-of-the-art facility as startup recycler Recleim begins renovations for its new e-waste recycling center.
General Manager Doug Huffer said renovations will begin in the next 30 to 45 days as the company starts construction of the facility set to be completed by the summer of 2014.
“We're trying to get that building, both internally and externally, ready to receive equipment that will be coming in later in the year,” he explained.
A number of upgrades will be needed to fit the needs of the company, which will be establishing a one-of-a-kind plant, Huffer said.
New loading and receiving docks will be added to the building, as well as new offices and a refurbished parking lot.
“We've got to get the reconstruction done first. That should take us through the summer and early fall, then we'll start working on bringing the factory up during the fourth quarter of 2013 and the first quarter of 2014.”
The company also recently hired a plant manager and quality control manager and is in the process of hiring a management team, Huffer said.
Recleim's facility in Graniteville will be the first in North America to use a process known as closed-loop recycling. The plant will have the capacity to recycle a variety of appliances, including refrigerators, laptops and cell phones,
Will Williams, director of the Aiken-Edgefield Economic Development Partnership, said the company is planning a ground-breaking ceremony in the near future to unveil the revamped facility.
He also noted that all the necessary paperwork has been filed for Recleim to move forward with the plant, including the County's fee-in-lieu-of-taxes agreement with the company.
Recleim has committed to a $40.6 million investment that is expected to generate 200 new jobs.
