USC Aiken roundup for May 18

COLUMBUS, Ga. — Seven USC Aiken baseball players have been tabbed to the 2013 Daktronics NCAA Division II All-Southeast Region Team.

Four Pacers were named to the First-Team with sophomore Ryan Metzler, senior Bryce Baur, senior Bill Gerstenslager and junior Taylor Grover all collecting First-Team accolades. Three Pacers were tabbed to the Second-Team with sophomore Ty Barkell, senior Josh Miller and junior Derek Beasley Second-Team choices.

The Pacers led the Peach Belt Conference with seven All-Region selections. In total, 18 Peach Belt Conference baseball players were chosen All-Region.

The First-Team selections will move on to the All-America ballot.

Stiebinger selected for pair of tennis honors

USC Aiken men’s tennis player Patrick Stiebinger was tabbed to the Capital One Academic NCAA Division II Men’s At-Large District Three First-Team and the Peach Belt Conference Men’s Tennis All-Academic Team on Thursday.

The Capital One Academic All-America program is selected by CoSIDA. As a First-Team member, Stiebinger (Weiden, Germany/Wichita State University) is now eligible for Academic All-America consideration.

The honors give Stiebinger three academic honors in the 2013 season as he was also tabbed the Peach Belt Conference Men’s Tennis Elite 15 Award Winner recently.

A junior, Stiebinger currently boasts a perfect 4.00 grade point average as a Business Administration major.

Three Pacers honored for academic efforts

AUGUSTA — Three USC Aiken women’s tennis players were tabbed Honorable Mention Peach Belt Conference Women’s Tennis All-Academic Team selections. USCA’s Caitlyn Lawrence, Franziska Regel and Margot Simon were noted by the league office for their efforts in the classroom and as members of the USCA women’s tennis team.

Lawrence ended her junior season with four wins in singles play. She claimed six wins in doubles. In the classroom, Lawrence currently owns a 3.706 grade point average as an Exercise and Sports Science major.

Regel closed out her junior campaign for USCA with 11 doubles wins. She posted 10 of her 11 wins in doubles at No. 2 doubles. She also claimed four singles victories during the 2013 season. In the classroom, Regel presently owns a 3.568 grade point average as a Business Administration major.

Simon was honored as the USCA women’s tennis Most Valuable Player recently. She also received the USCA Student-Athlete Leadership award. Simon posted a team-best 14 singles wins in the 2013 season. She claimed seven singles wins in Peach Belt Conference action. She also picked up 10 doubles wins in her junior season. In the classroom, Simon currently owns a 3.404 grade point average as a Business Administration major.

Atkins selected as district All-Academic

USC Aiken golfer Matt Atkins was tabbed to the Capital One Academic NCAA Division II Men’s At-Large District Three First-Team on Thursday.

The Capital One Academic All-America program is selected by CoSIDA. As a First-Team member, Atkins is now eligible for Academic All-America consideration.

Atkins garners the honor for the second consecutive year. He went on to claim Academic All-America accolades in the 2011-12 season. Atkins was also tabbed a Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholar last year.

A senior, Atkins currently boasts a 3.708 grade point average as a Business Administration major.

Atkins has twice been named Peach Belt Conference Golfer of the Week in the 2012-13 season (Oct. 11 and March 14).
