Aiken man charged with DWI in New York

An Aiken man was charged with driving while intoxicated in New York after he allegedly struck six vehicles while driving, according to the Putnam County Sheriff’s Department.

Marcos Castro-Beltran, 28, of York Street, was charged with DWI after failing multiple field sobriety tests. He was processed at the Putnam County Correctional Facility, where the charge was upgraded to aggravated DWI, a misdemeanor.

The incident happened about 1:30 a.m. on Monday, according to a statement from the sheriff’s department.

Officers arriving on the scene found a “heavily damaged” vehicle that had been driven onto a sidewalk and was missing a wheel, and Castro-Beltran standing near the vehicle, according to the statement. Castro-Beltran told officers he had been drinking.

While traveling east on Main Street in the village of Brewster, N.Y., Castro-Beltran allegedly struck five vehicles at a used car dealership, a vehicle located in the driveway of a home, a utility pole and an earth embankment, according to the statement.

If found guilty, Castro-Beltran could face up to a year in jail and a fine of up to $1,000.
