A serious two-vehicle accident that occurred on Friday morning on Rutland Drive left two people with severe injuries, according to the Aiken Department of Public Safety.

At 11:39 a.m., Aiken Public Safety responded to a call regarding a traffic collision that occurred on Rutland Drive just east of Northland Boulevard, according to Sgt. Jake Mahoney.

Each vehicle involved had one occupant and both drivers had to be extricated, Mahoney said. Both drivers were transported to Georgia Regents Medical Center.

Mahoney said a 1982 Mercedes two-door sedan was traveling west on Rutland Drive in the outside lane when it was struck by a 2000 Ford SUV. The SUV drifted into the westbound lane and hit the sedan head on, Mahoney said.

Traffic was blocked for about an hour and a half as crews worked to remove the drivers from their vehicles and clear the scene of the accident.

The cause of the collision is still under investigation, Mahoney said, and the Public Safety Accident Reconstruction team will be handling the case.

Aiken Public Safety, Aiken County Sheriff's Office, Aiken County EMS and the Couchton Fire Department all responded to the scene.

The names of victims are being withheld at this time.
