A Montmorenci man and his daughter are dead following a fire that police say may be arson.

Dunkan Baker, 28, and his 2-year-old daughter died as a result of the fire that occurred at abut 10 a.m. at 331 Old Tory Trail in Montmorenci, according to the Aiken County Sheriff's Office.

Baker was pronounced dead at Doctor's Hospital in Augusta, according to Aiken County Coroner Tim Carlton, and his daughter was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Sheriff's Office is conducting an arson investigation at the home, which is considered "suspicious" according to police.

The fire was reported by a passing motorist. The Montmorenci Fire Department, EMS and sheriff's deputies responded to the scene, and Baker was located just after fire services arrived. He was then transported to the hospital, where he died at about 3 p.m.

His 2-year-old daughter was located deceased inside the residence after the fire was extinguished. The investigation is ongoing, police said.

Carlton said both father and child died from thermal injuries and smoke inhalation, and an autopsy is scheduled in Newberry Sunday morning.
