USCA seventh after first round

HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, Fla. – The nationally third-ranked USC Aiken men’s golf team is in seventh place after the first round of action at the 2013 NCAA Division II South/Southeast Regional at the par-72, 6,928-yard El Campeon golf course at the Mission Inn Resort & Club

USCA concluded the first round with a team score of 295.

The Pacers were paced in the first round by Peach Belt Conference Player of the Year Matt Atkins, who carded a 2-under 70 in the opening round of the regional. Atkins had three birdies in the first round.

Atkins is currently tied with three others for second place individually after one round of play. Nova Southeastern’s Ricardo Celia is in first individually after day one. Celia posted a 3-under 69 in the first round.

USCA’s JP Solis rebounded from a disappointing front nine by posting five birdies on the back nine en route to an even 72. Solis is currently tied for 11th.

Mark Dickson claimed three birdies in obtaining a 76, while Hayden Letien finished with a 77. Letien eagled No. 14.

Taylor Welborn carded an 81 in the opening round of the regional.

Current national No. 2 Barry is the leader after the first round at 284. National No. 1 Nova Southeastern is second at 287. No. 4 Lynn is third at 288.

USCA is vying to make its 17th appearance in the NCAA Division II Men’s Golf Championship in the South/Southeast regional.

The top seven teams and top two student-athletes not with a team after stroke play in the 2013 NCAA South/Southeast Regional will advance to the finals May 20-24 at the par-71, 7,061-yard East Course at the Hershey Country Club in Hershey, Pa.

The second round is scheduled to get underway at 7:30 a.m. on Tuesday. The first Pacer is scheduled to tee off at 12 p.m. on Tuesday.
