Relay For Life fundraiser is Friday
The North Augusta and Midland Valley Relay For Life fundraiser will be held Friday at North Augusta High School.
The event will begin with opening ceremonies at 6 p.m. at North Augusta High School’s track. This year’s Relay will end at midnight, but will include all of the traditional components of an all-night Relay For Life event.
The annual event benefits the American Cancer Society and aims to celebrate survivors, remember those lost to cancer and bring the community together to fight for a cure.
“Relay For Life is a chance to gather as a community to honor those who are no longer with us and to celebrate those who are surviving and thriving,” said Kristin Bodkin, North Augusta/Midland Valley Relay For Life event chair.
The event will begin with a speech by North Augusta survivor Melanie Chavous. Survivors will walk the first lap around the track and will be joined on the second by their caregivers. The event’s teams will join in the third lap, and participants will continue to walk throughout the night.
Close to 25 teams – made up of businesses, schools, churches, community groups, families and friends – have registered for the event and have been fundraising over the past few months.
The teams will continue to fundraise throughout the evening Friday selling a large variety of foods and desserts as well as other items. A silent auction will also be held.
Other activities throughout the evening include karate demonstrations, live music, games and contests and the Mizz Relay competition. This will also be the inaugural year of the annual North Augusta/Midland Valley Guitar Pull at 7:45 p.m.
The luminary ceremony will take place at 10 p.m., and closing ceremonies will begin at 11:45 p.m. Admission to Relay For Life is free.
“Relay For Life is not just an event, but an experience that the whole community needs to support,” Bodkin said.
