The Aiken Rite Aid will be closing its doors within the next month or so.

According to Rite Aid Corporate Spokesman Eric Harkreader, the last day of regular business, including the pharmacy, will be May 10. Employees will then do inventory of its merchandise and reopen the front of the store on May 20 to sell whatever they have left.

Harkreader said the Aiken Rite Aid has fewer than 10 employees and that corporate has been able to offer them job placement at surrounding Rite Aid stores.

According to the corporate website, there are stores in New Ellenton and Williston, as well as several locations in the Augusta area.

Harkreader said the Aiken store is closing due to “business conditions.”

“Rite Aid, like many retailers, evaluates every location to make sure it makes good financial sense,” Harkreader said. “Unfortunately, it no longer did so at this location.”

All prescription files will be transferred to Walmart located at 2035 Whiskey Road.

Rite Aid opened an Aiken store in 1988 at the Centre South Shopping Center off Silver Bluff Road. Currently, Rite Aid is located on Pine Log Road next to Staples.

Rite Aid, which is one of the biggest drugstore chains, operated 4,621 stores as of March 30 compared to the 4,659 stores about a year ago, according to a press release from early April.
