Local residents will have the opportunity to celebrate the 139th running of the Kentucky Derby on Saturday.
The Wing Place is hosting a Kentucky Derby party to benefit Equine Rescue of Aiken. The event will be Saturday evening from 5 to 8 p.m.
The event itself will feature a number of fun activities including a silent auction, race horse trivia and stick horse auction and races, said Jim Rhodes, Equine Rescue of Aiken farm manager.
Racing enthusiasts will have an opportunity to watch the races on many of the television screens at the Aiken-based eating establishment, have dinner, and, if they wish donate to the nonprofit organization, contributions are welcome.
The stick horses will also be auctioned off, and they will feature the names of this year's Kentucky Derby starters, and everyone who participates will receive a free mint julep, Rhodes said.
There will be best hat and best dressed contests, with prizes awarded in each category.
The Wing Place will also have food and drink specials during the party.
“We're very thankful for the support we receive from the community,” said Rhodes. “These type of events are very much needed.”
The Wing Place is located at 732 E. Pine Log Road.
