One teen dead, another injured after single-car crash

A single car crash early this morning in Aiken County has left one teenager dead and another injured. 

Justin G. Cantwell, 18, of Ridge Spring was killed in the crash, and Dustin Day, 17, of Aiken is critically injured following the crash that occurred at around 1:30 a.m., according to Aiken County Coroner Tim Carlton.

The teens were traveling north in the 2000 block of  Piper Road in a 2003 GMC Sierra truck when the vehicle went out of control, went into a ditch and struck a utility pole, causing the vehicle to overturn, ejecting both teens, Carlton said.

Neither of the occupants were wearing their seatbelts at the time of the crash, Carlton said.Cantwell was pronounced dead at Georgia Regents University Medical Center this morning due to multiple body trauma, and Day remains in critical condition at the hospital, Carlton said.

The coroner said alcohol is suspected to be a contributing factor in the crash.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating the crash, and toxicology is pending, Carlton said.
