Dogwood Stable’s Palace Malice will have his final breeze moved up a day, and will work Saturday at Churchill Downs in preparation for the 139th Kentucky Derby on May 4, said W. Cothran Campbell, Dogwood Stable president, in a phone interview Friday afternoon.

“It appears that there will be some heavy rain moving into Louisville that will make the track muddy on Sunday,” said Campbell.

The bay son of two-time Horse of the Year Curlin will have Hall of Fame jockey Mike Smith in the irons for today’s breeze, said Campbell.

“Mike Smith will be flying in from California to ride him,” said Campbell. “He was able to get out of his mounts (Friday at Hollywood Park), and is flying to Kentucky this afternoon (Friday).”

This is the first time Smith will be up on the Grade 1 placed stakes horse. Palace Malice is conditioned by 5-time Eclipse Award winner Todd Pletcher. The 3-year-old colt was trained by Legacy Stable’s Brad Stauffer at the Aiken Training Track.
