RIVER FOREST, Ill. (AP) — Funeral services were underway in suburban Chicago for a young American diplomat killed while delivering textbooks to a school in southern Afghanistan.
Several hundred mourners attended Wednesday’s Mass for Anne Smedinghoff. Some have lit small candles in the pews of the St. Luke Church in River Forest and some held white roses. Pall bearers have removed the U.S. flag draping her wooden coffin.
The church is attached to the Catholic school she attended as a child.
The 25-year-old Smedinghoff and four other Americans were killed earlier this month while walking from a military base to a nearby school. Two explosions occurred, apparently a suicide car bombing followed by a roadside blast.
White ribbons are tied around trees and lampposts for many blocks surrounding the church.
