A run planned for Saturday to benefit United Way of Aiken County will be carried out in honor of the victims of Monday’s Boston Marathon bombing.
The public is encouraged to participate in Aiken Electric Cooperative’s second annual Run United 5K, 10K and Kids Fun Run through downtown Aiken, which starts at 8 a.m. Registration is ongoing.
“In light of the recent tragic events in Boston, we would like to dedicate our Run United race to the victims of the bombings. Our thoughts and prayers go out to them and their families, and we want to run with strength and dedication for our United Way of Aiken County. All proceeds from this race will be allocated to United Way to help care for our neighbors,” said Gary Stooksbury, Aiken Electric Co-op CEO.
The entry cost for the 5K or 10K is $30. The entry cost for the Kids Fun Run is $15.
Currently, there are approximately 120 participants registered. Check-in will begin at 7 a.m. on Saturday.
The race will start at the Newberry Street festival site, wind through downtown and end back on Newberry Street.
Police officers will be on hand to direct traffic around the race route, according to Aiken Co-op spokesperson Muriel Carter.
Carter said the Aiken Electric Co-op hit on the idea of a race benefitting the community several years ago, when it decided to amp up its in-house corporate United Way fundraising campaign.
“We look forward to Aiken Electric’s wonderful Run United event scheduled for Saturday morning. We hope everyone will come out to support this event which will raise money to help others less fortunate in our community and to run in honor of the victims and their families. The generosity of our community remains steadfast and unified in the face of hardship and tragedy. Our thoughts and prayers are with all of the victims of yesterday’s tragedy at the Boston Marathon,” said Sharon Rodgers, United Way president.
Participants may pre-register at www.active.com. Registration will also be accepted the day of the race.
