Pimento cheese sandwiches have been a Masters crowd favorite for decades.

However, ESPN The Magazine senior writer Wright Thompson noticed a change in flavor this year, so he endeavored to find out why exactly the spread tasted different.

To paraphrase, when Augusta National tapped Wife Saver to make the sandwiches, that took business away from an unidentified man in Aiken who made the cheese himself. The Aiken man would not reveal his recipe.

Wife Saver was able to recreate the recipe, then Augusta National stopped using Wife Saver for the tournament's sandwiches.

Now, Wife Saver won't reveal the recipe, so the tournament has had to make do.

So, who was/is the Aiken man that for years made the cheese? His identity remains unknown.

Email Aiken Standard News Editor Haley Hughes at to shed light on the mystery.
