Tourism adds more jobs in S.C.
HILTON HEAD ISLAND (AP) — Tourism is the fastest growing in industry in South Carolina, at least as far as new jobs are concerned.
The Island Packet of Hilton Head reports that the hospitality and leisure segment of the economy added 10,800 jobs during the past year, more than any other industry.
Figures from the state Department of Employment and Workforce show that, in February, there were more than 212,000 workers in the industry statewide. That’s an increase of more than 5 percent from the same time last year.
John Salazar is a professor of hospitality management at the University of South Carolina Beaufort. He says that the trends in South Carolina reflect the growing hospitality industry nationwide.
Tourism is a $15 billion industry in South Carolina.
