MIAMI (AP) — Authorities searching for a missing family from Ohio who failed to return from a Florida Everglades airboat trip said they have heard whistles and an air horn.

Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission spokesman Jorge Pino said Friday a helicopter is going to the area where the sounds were heard in hopes it is the missing family of five.

The searchers are using aircraft and airboats to look for the family in an area covering more than 1,000 square miles.

The family’s airboat is painted in camouflage and could be difficult to see. The area also had heavy thunderstorms and rain Thursday.

The family was identified as 44-year-old Scott Schreck; his 42-year-old wife, Carrie; and their three young children. Their hometown was not immediately confirmed.
