Dear Scott: My husband of 25 years left me for a younger woman. Now that I am single, I would like some pointers on how to go about grabbing up another man. Since you are a male yourself, I thought you would be a good person to ask and since it is your line of work. What could I do to improve my appearance in general? Should I change my hair, clothing and makeup completely and look totally different? I have looked the same for years. I’m not sure how to go about all of the changes in my life right now. Dating again sounds very scary, and I would like to be comfortable in my skin. I feel like I want to look like a whole new person but don’t really know where to start.

Answer: Start by relaxing a little and take a deep breath. Spring is synonymous with rebirth. So give yourself an overhaul just for the fun of it.

Find a calm place: Learn to be comfortable with your inner-self before making any outward change. Find a quiet place in your home to reflect about your life and what kind of changes need to be made. Make a list and prioritize the items accordingly. Being comfortable in your skin will require comfort from within. Although it would seem like the salon would be first on the list, it is best to seek the advice of a counselor to help you through this time of change.

Look the look that’s you: Now that you know who you are, look the part. Conservative or cosmopolitan, the looks are many. Find photos by searching “what to wear” online in various cities around the world. This will help give you direction for a new wardrobe and provide a stylist with information during a consultation.

Start at the top: Your hair and makeup are the first eye catchers. This is the best place to start creating the new outward reflection of your inner strength and beauty. Make it match the image of the person that you would figuratively be, or fine tune the new you that you already are. If you have been stuck in a rut for years, being single again should be all the motivation you need.

Work your way down: Now that you have the top done, you can try tuning up the body. A membership to the gym is a great way to release endorphins and strengthen your self-esteem. When you feel good, you look good. It’s also a great diversion from the day-to-day chores that can sometimes make a person feel incomplete. Exercise is one of the things you can do for yourself where the time is “all about you.” Yoga, Pilates and Zumba are interactive sports with double the benefits. You can meet people, make friends and get in shape.

Wrap it up: A few new items for the closet always makes you feel better when going out on the town is in your future. Find a clothier that can help you put your new look together. Black is a favorite if your budget is tight. It’s slimming and fashionable in any city – day or night.

Step on it: Finish the package with a new pair of shoes for the final touch.
