Pacers and Polo – the third and final jewel in Aiken’s Triple Crown – is a go today, and crowds are expected to flock to see the game, the people and, of course, to stomp divots.

At Powderhouse Polo Field, located – as the name may suggest – on Powderhouse Road, the gates will open at 10:30 a.m., a VIP lunch begins at 11:30 a.m., with the main event, the match, starting at 1 p.m.

This year’s contest will feature a number of outstanding players, who also happen to be Aiken residents, and provide spectators with an up-close look at the sport.

One can expect the excitement to abound from the game’s opening bowl-in to the final horn at the end of the sixth chukker. The two teams are the Designer Builders versus Burger King. The game’s sponsors include Parsons, Outback Steakhouse, Travinia, University Housing, Designer Builders, Burger King, the USC Aiken Pacers and the Aiken Standard.

For some it is not about game, it’s about the social aspects – tailgating, socializing and stomping.

Perhaps the most widely known polo tradition is the ceremonial stomping of the divots. During half-time of a match, spectators are invited to go onto the field to participate in “divot-stomping,” which has developed to not only help replace mounds of earth that are torn up by the horses hooves, but to afford spectators the opportunity to walk about and socialize.

The proceeds for the game and event support the USC Aiken Pacer Club, which is the booster organization of the athletic department.

Tickets for the event are $10 for adults and $5 for children at the gate.

This year’s Designer Builders’ roster is composed of Barb Uskup (A), Adam Snow (6), Antonio Galvan (4) and Alan Meeker (A) versus Burger King, a team whose members include Hugh Worsham (1), Horacio Onetto (4), Justin Pimsner (2) and Kegan Walsh (2).
