South Aiken 149
The South Aiken High School golf team defeated crosstown rival Aiken High in Wednesday’s match at Woodside. The Thoroughbreds were led by Hayden Ploeger, who carded a 35 to earn medalist honors.
Other T-Breds to score in the match included Jake Carter (37), Alex Handy (38) and Ryan Carpenter (39). The Hornets’ top scorer was Alex Skiff (41), followed by Spencer Skiff (43), Will McCants (45) and Hayne Floyd (46). South Aiken will return to action this weekend when it participates in the Georgia-South Carolina Cup at Willow Creek in Greer.
North Augusta 2
In a Tuesday match at Riverview Park, Aiken High defeated North Augusta 4-2 in a Region 5-AAAA showdown. The Yellow Jackets got a win in No. 1 singles, when Liam Wiggins beat Andy Wykel (6-0, 6-0), and in doubles, when the team of Cam Wilkes and Allen Cambell defeated Jeremiah Hawkins and John Callicott (6-3, 7-5). The Hornets (4-2, 2-2) swept the rest of the action, as Neal Patel defeated Hampton Williams (6-1, 6-2), Matt Wykel defeated Blake Elam (6-1, 6-4), Uli Pentiz defeated Matthew Berry (6-1, 6-2) and McLeod Barber defeated Glenn Barnes (6-1, 6-2).
It was the second region loss in a row for North Augusta, following a 5-1 set back to South Aiken last Thursday. Wiggins was the lone winner in that match, staving off Jordan Dingle (4-6, 6-4, 18-16). In the rest of the action South Aiken prevailed as Stefan Zotovich beat Hampton Williams (6-1 6-1), Preston Tiffany beat Blake Elam (6-1 6-1), Petar Zotovich beat Matthew Berry (6-2 6-1), Zach Thatcher beat Glenn Barnes (6-1 6-1) and the doubles team of Marco Zotovich and Jonny Bowman beat John Michael Baldy Luke Smith (6-1 6-0).
The Thoroughbreds have been picking up momentum, following that win with a successful run in the Rae’s Creek Invitational over the weekend. South Aiken defeated Woodberry Forest 10-2, Charlotte Latin 10-2 and Augusta Prep 10-0.
The T-Breds followed that with a 6-0 win over White Knoll Tuesday to improve their record to 8-0 overall and 4-0 in region play. They got dominant wins from Petar Zotovich, Thatcher, Marco Zotovich, Bowman, Matthew Willis and the doubles team of Winston Nguyen and Eric Hogue.
South Aiken will face crosstown rival Aiken high tonight at Odell Weeks at 5 p.m.
South Aiken 3
The South Aiken High School girls soccer team suffered a loss Tuesday to Region 5-AAAA rival Lexington. Macey Bosley, Jessica Schifer and Sabrina Giancroce scored goals for the T-Breds who will return to action tonight at North Augusta.
Ridge Spring-Monetta 8
In its second season as a varsity program, the Ridge Spring-Monetta soccer team scored an impressive win over North. Trojan (3-1) goals were scored by Carlos Fernandez, Eric Jimenez, Drey Hicks and Travious Wigfall.
Silver Bluff 12
The Silver Bluff baseball team maintained a perfect record against Region 5-AA opponents in a win over Edisto. The Bulldogs (8-3, 6-0) got a 3-for-3 game from Thomas Crumley, accounting for three RBIs. Adam Martin went 2-for-4 with two RBIs, while Dalton Smith and Jordan Lambert – the winning pitcher – went 2-for-3 with an RBI. Lambert improved to 2-0 for Silver Bluff, which will return to action tonight against Barnwell.
Dutch Fork 7
North Augusta 2
Corbin Lutier went 3-for-3, but it wasn’t enough for the Yellow Jackets to overcome Dutch Fork Tuesday. Chaz Davey pitched a complete game, but surrendered five earned runs and suffered the loss for North Augusta (4-2, 2-2 Region 5-AAAA), which will host Lexington on Friday.
Silver Bluff 8
Silver Bluff (6-5, 5-1 Region 5-AA) suffered a tough road loss for their first region defeat of the season. The Bulldogs led 6-0 in the sixth before giving up seven runs in the bottom of the frame. They took the lead back with two runs in the top of the seventh, but the Cougars scored the walk-off win in their last at-bat.
Haley Key (2-1) took the loss in the circle but went 2-for-4 at the plate. Jasmine Squirewell was the Bulldogs’ leading hitter at 3-for-4 with a triple and two RBIs, and Iyceiss Drayton went 2-for-4 with a double. Mia Ruffin went 2-for-4 for Silver Bluff, which plays at Barnwell today.
South Aiken JV 5
Lexington 5 (8 innings)
The South Aiken junior varsity team beat Lexington in the eighth inning to improve to 8-6 on the season. Carley Dempsey (3-2) picked up the win, while Ashley Blair, Caroline Thames and Emily Harley each had two hits for the T-Breds, who will play at home against Dutch Fork on Friday.
Aiken Tech 7-12
USC Salkehatchie 1-0
The Aiken Tech softball team was dominant in a doubleheader sweep of USC Salkehatchie Tuesday. Tiffany Osmanski was in the circle won the opener 7-1, while Tiffany Sellers was part of a shutout in the night cap. The Lady Knights (15-13, 6-0 Region 10) will return to action today as they play host to East Georgia State College in a doubleheader slated to start at 1 p.m.
