The Juilliard School returns to Aiken for the fifth time for its 2013 Juilliard in Aiken Performing Arts Festival and Outreach Program.
Graduate Jennifer Sheehan’s “I Know A Place” performance in January at The Willcox was the program’s official start.
Sheehan has appeared in Aiken before, and the cabaret performance she brought this time showcased 1960s songs.
The festival will continue today with a first-time program, Juilliard Juniors.
Titled “Masks, Magic and Mischief,” children, ages 4 to 6, will gather at the URS Center for Performing Arts and use masks, swords or wands to act out scenes from plays like “Romeo and Juliet.” Juilliard School’s Drama Division will be present to interact with the children. The event is free and starts at 2 p.m., but advanced reservation was required.
Two performances will be held on Sunday.
The Charles Yang Dugan Duo and Pisticci String Trio will play at 2 p.m. at St. Mary Help of Christians Catholic Church, 203 Park Ave. S.E. The duo is comprised of violinist Charles Yang, who has appeared in Aiken before, and pianist Peter Dugan. The trio consists of violinist Fabiola Kim, violist Jocelin Pan and cellist Patrick McGuire.
At 6 p.m., returning musician and organist Paul Jacobs will play at St. Thaddeus Episcopal Church, 125 Pendleton St. S.W., for “The Sublime Instrument” program. Jacobs is The Juilliard School’s organ department chair.
The rest of the week will see these and other Juilliard students, past, present and future.
The Fifth Year Anniversary Celebration Concert will feature Anderson and Roe, Juilliard Jazz Artist Diploma Ensemble, Yang Dugan Duo, String Trio, Pre-College Artists, the vocalists and Juilliard415.
Anderson and Roe will emcee the concert. It will be held on Friday at 8 p.m. at the Etherredge Center. Tickets are available through the URS Center box office and cost $45, $35, $25 and $5 for students.
Other events will be held but are closed to the public.
Juilliard in Aiken also will be conducting school outreaches through the week.
