GRANITEVILLE — Emily Mayson had never served as starting pitcher going into the Mustangs’ Friday night game against South Aiken in the Palmetto Classic. The eighth-grader made her first game one to remember, striking out eleven batters while helping Midland Valley (3-0) to a 5-1 victory.

The Mustangs jumped out to an early lead, putting three runs on the scoreboard in the first inning. It was smooth sailing from that point on for Midland Valley. Mayson’s one blemish in the complete game came in the second inning when she gave up a home run. The homer was one of the four hits she allowed in the complete-game performance. She was also able to stay calm under pressure in the fourth inning when she worked her way out of a jam with runners on second and third by recording a strikeout to end the inning and preserve the lead.

Head coach Michelle Yeater was pleased with her pitcher’s performance.

“She gave us some solid innings and did great in her first full game,” Yeater said.

The Mustangs tacked on one run in both the third and fourth inning. Midland Valley had 10 hits on the night. Mackenzie Henderson went 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Alexis Bates and Mayson were the other Mustangs with multiple hits in the game.

“We did a good job of putting the ball in play,” Yeater said. “We’re a young team still working on things but we made good contact”

Midland Valley and South Aiken will play again in the gold round today at 2 p.m. Midland Valley, North Augusta and White Knoll were all undefeated heading into the final day of the tournament. However, Midland Valley missed out on the championship game due to tie-breaker of runs allowed.
