LETTER: Advice if you’ve been hacked
Advice if you’ve been hacked
By this time you should have received your individual letter from the state informing you that your tax information was hacked. If you wish to take another step to prevent ID theft you may want to place a security freeze with the credit score companies. This prevents anyone from opening new credit card accounts, setting up new cell phone or utility accounts, applying for loans or mortgages, etc., in your name.To place a security freeze you must contact the three credit score companies.
Experian – 888-397-3742
Equifax – 888-298-0045
TransUnion – 888-909-8872
Pin numbers will be issued and you will need these to either remove or temporarily lift the freeze.
There is no fee for South Carolina residents to place or to remove a freeze.
