COLUMBIA (AP) — The American Civil Liberties Union is set to hold a rally in support of the Voting Rights Act.

ACLU members plan a news conference for noon Tuesday at the Statehouse to discuss why they think the civil rights legislation is still important today.

The rally comes a day before the U.S. Supreme Court hears a case out of Alabama that could end a requirement for South Carolina and other states with histories of discriminatory voting practices to get federal approval for any new voting laws.

The ACLU said maintaining the entire Voting Rights Act is critical to make sure all people remain on equal footing when going to vote.
