Weather pushes back tournaments at MVHS

Because of inclement weather, Friday and today’s games in the Mustang Invitational baseball tournament and Palmetto Classic softball tournament have been cancelled.

Even with built-in weather days in the schedule, the cancellations have forced a slight change in the format of the Mustang Invitational. The eight teams will play three pool games instead of four round-robin games before the championship round.

In the Mustang Invitational, Pool A consists of Midland Valley, Orangeburg-Wilkinson, Barnwell and Ninety Six, while Pool B is composed of James Island, Silver Bluff Fox Creek and Dixie. Play will resume on Monday at 5:30 p.m. with Fox Creek vs. Dixie at Midland Valley, followed by Midland Valley vs. Orangeburg-Wilkinson. Also on Monday, Barnwell will play Ninety Six at Silver Bluff High School.

Play will continue each day through Friday, with the championship round on March 2. The event will conclude at 7 p.m. on March 2 with the championship game between the winners of each pool.

In the Palmetto Classic, the eight teams will still be competing in round-robin format with one less game before the medal round. Play will begin on Monday at Midland Valley, first with a 5 p.m. game between North Augusta and Barnwell, followed by a 7 p.m. game between Silver Bluff and Midland Valley. Also on Monday, Fox Creek and White Knoll will play at 5 p.m. at Aiken Technical College, followed at 7 p.m. by Saluda and South Aiken.

Palmetto Classic action will continue on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday after another weather make-up day on Tuesday, and the March 2 medal round will conclude at 4 p.m. with a game between the teams with the two best records.
