If you hear an explosion today, don’t be alarmed; it’s the 18th annual Black History Gospel Explosion taking place at the Ridge Spring Civic Center.

The show will feature the talent of Roy & Revelation, the Rev. Billy Smith and the Radio Angels, The Hopkins Brothers, Sister Mary Myers and the Team of Joy, and Thelma J. Robinson with special guests The Original Supreme Angels.

“There’s a cross-section of gospel artists that will be there,” said Arlene Edwards, a spokesperson for the event. “You always have the up-and-comings in that particular genre of music.”

Edwards said the show has been performed at multiple places around the state and has been in Johnston for the last few years. She said many black history month programs are more about “arguing.”

“Sometimes it pours salt in the wound,” she said. “This is a celebration. It’s a celebration of being a part of this great country.”

Edwards said the show was started after identifying a need “to do something that really deviated from the norm.”

“It’s an overwhelming response from the people,” she said. “Usually, it’s standing room only.”

Doors to the civic center open at 5 p.m. and the event begins at 6. Tickets are $18 in advance and $22 at the door and can be purchased in Aiken at Snazzy’s Beauty and Hair and Busy Bee Beauty Shop, or by calling Virginia Davis at 443-8396.

Tickets are also available in Johnston at Butler’s Beauty and Barber, Hazel’s Beauty and Barber and Ms. Julia’s Beauty Salon.

Children age 10 and younger are $10 at the door. For more information, contact Davis or Darriel Council at (803) 360-5191.
