Sponsored by the Small Business and Rural Development Division of the S.C. Department of Commerce, the Rural Summit Photography Contest is part of the annual South Carolina Rural Summit conference, which will be held in Aiken on March 4. The contest is open to the public, and entries should reflect the unique features of rural life in the Palmetto State. Fifteen finalist photos will be chosen by S.C. Department of Commerce staff and displayed at the Rural Summit. Attendees of the Rural Summit will vote, and the winning photo will be announced at the end of the program on March 4. Photographs must be original work of the applicant and feature rural South Carolina subject matter. Photos may be color or black-and-white, and should be submitted as an 8-inch by 10-inch image with name of photo, name of photographer, and completed registration and release forms, which are located on the Commerce website at this link: Rural Summit Photo Contest. PalmettoPride presentation of “Litter Trashes Everyone” puppet show, performed by the Columbia Marionette Theatre, will be in Clearwater today at 9 a.m. and in Gloverville at 1 p.m. This show is one of the many educational programs offered by PalmettoPride to engage students in helping keep our state clean and how they can be part of the solution. This show is about 20 minutes, featuring marionettes and hand puppets to convey the message that every citizen has a responsibility to help keep South Carolina beautiful.

The Lloyd Kennedy Charter School and Aiken Performing Arts Academy present the second Jazz Night today in the campus auditorium from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tickets are $25 per person. An Italian-themed dinner will be served with beverages and dessert. Students, accompanied by musician Randy Brooks, will perform live contemporary, jazz and gospel music.

There will be a Valentine’s Prom Party today featuring Yesterday’s Sounds. The American Legion Auxiliary Unit 71 is sponsoring “Dinner and Elvis” today at 6 p.m. Russell Schneider will be featured as Elvis. The Miss Southern Sweetheart Pageant will be held Saturday at NACOG, located at 2610 Columbia Highway, starting at 10:30 a.m. The deadline to enter was Feb. 10. No door entries. There will be two Overall Miss Southern Sweetheart winners and all contestants will receive a tiara. The Catholic Women’s Association will hold its annual Game/Card Party in St. Angela Hall on Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The cost is $10 per person and includes a light lunch and numerous prizes. The Black Historical Committee will host its 12th annual Black History Parade on Saturday at 2 p.m. In case of inclement weather, the alternate day will be Sunday at 2 p.m. The committee would like to welcome all area businesses, churches, schools and patrons to be a part of this historical event. The parade processional will start on Florence Street across from the American Legion Post 212 and precede East on Hampton Avenue and end at Smith-Hazel Recreation Center. The deadline to register entries was Feb. 8. All entries must be in place prior to 2 p.m., but entries can arrive at 1 p.m. if needed.
