The scary mess we’re facing

Know what bothers me about the gun problems in our country? Everyone seems to have come to the conclusion that the real problem is the killing of small children, but they don’t seem to care about the murder of anyone 16 years of age or older.

Murder high school students at Columbine, slaughter mostly young adults in a Colorado movie theater, kill innocent citizens at a political meet-and-greet in Arizona, and nothing is done. And how many hundreds of other innocent people have been gunned down in our United States since the Columbine incident?

Nobody in our country, not the state and local authorities, nor the National Rifle Association, have seen fit to do something about these horrible incidents. It took the gut-wrenching mass murder of school children in Newtown, Conn., to awaken us to the gravity of the scary mess we’re now facing.

Who is next to be killed by gun fire? Did you know that our state legislature is considering a new law to allow concealed weapons in restaurants where liquor is served? There is considerable support from our legislators. Why does anyone think this is a good idea?

Aiken has lost two fine uniformed police officers in the recent past. What is the stance of our police chief or our sheriff to the possibility of an armed drunk killing a cop in a bar fight? (Oh, I forgot, the law that is being considered in the S.C. Legislature requires that licensed gun holders must promise not to drink if they are allowed to enter a restaurant with a concealed weapon.)

Don’t let this be passed into law. Contact your state representative and ask him to vote against the restaurant carry law.
