A man who fired a shotgun multiple times into the air and then left the scene in Wagener yesterday was detained on probate papers around 8 a.m. this morning by Aiken County Sheriff’s Office deputies, police said.

He was taken to the Aiken Regional Medical Center for a mental health evaluation, according to Capt. Troy Elwell of the Aiken County Sheriff’s Office.

The incident started around 2:30 p.m. Monday. It took place outside a home and several law enforcement agencies responded.

Officers thought the man, who had been described by a relative as suicidal, had entered the residence after firing the gun. But when they searched the home, he wasn’t there. The Aiken County Bloodhound Tracking Team tried to find the man, but the search was called off at 6:15 p.m.
