When Eleanor Bookstaver founded the Aiken Women’s Heart Board in 1968, she probably could not have foreseen the success it would have today.
The board has hosted an annual benefit for more than 40 years to raise money for the American Heart Association, with the show raising $104,200 last year.
This year’s “Remember Then” show will be truly for Bookstaver, who passed away last year in May.
“The show features songs of the ’50s and ’60s. … Music of that era was a favorite of Eleanor Booksaver,” said Linda Calhoun, publicity chair.
“Remember Then” will open Feb. 20 at 7:30 p.m. at the USC Aiken Etherredge Center. Other performances are Feb. 21-23 at 7:30 p.m., Feb. 23 at 2 p.m. and Feb. 24 at 3 p.m.
The musical will follow the past and present lives of a 1959 college class, according to Calhoun.
“We stood up at the rehearsal (last) Monday night, and everybody is just wanting to dance,” Calhoun said. “And the cast is really enjoying it.”
More than 24 local singers and actors make up the cast. Jim Moore directed and wrote the show, with Agnes Hobson assisting him. Darrell Rains is the musical director.
The Heart Throbs, a local singing band who supports the American Heart Association, will perform.
Tickets are still available for all shows except for the Feb. 24 performance. Prices are $20 for matinees and $25 for evening shows.
To reserve tickets, call Karen Wyont at 649-7650 for the Feb. 20 show at 7:30 p.m; Ginger Talbert at 648-7037 for the Feb. 21 show at 7:30 p.m.; Frankie Lambright at 648-8720 for the Feb. 22 show at 7:30 p.m.; Norma Campbell at 648-2042 for the Feb. 23 show at 2 p.m. and Christy Kisner at 648-6197 for the Feb. 23 show at 7:30 p.m.
All money goes toward the South Carolina chapter of American Heart Association.
“The goal of the Heart Board is to prevent or reduce the number of people who die from heart disease,” Calhoun said. “Eleanor Bookstaver’s words still ring true today, ‘Everyone has been touched by heart disease in some way.’”
For anyone wishing to make a donation in honor of Booksaver can mail it to Aiken Women’s Heart Board, P.O. Box 5211, Aiken, SC 29804.
The board also hosts an annual tea to prelude the benefit, as well as to thank the community for its support, Calhoun said.
