Although the Aiken High School boys' basketball team won its regular-season finale against crosstown rival South Aiken Thursday, it came with a steep price. The Hornets will open the playoffs without star player Shawn Moore.
Moore reportedly will be suspended for the start of the Class AAAA state playoffs because of his involvement in a fight that briefly broke out during the game, a 55-47 Aiken victory.
South Aiken's Teddy Rich and Aiken's Stacy Toole were both ejected from the game late in the third quarter after exchanging blows, including punches. Film of the game reportedly revealed Moore became involved in the fracas as an agitator, not a peacemaker. That action will reportedly cause Moore – and Toole – to be suspended for Aiken's playoff opener at Conway next Wednesday.
Should the Hornets win that game, both Moore and Toole would likely be suspended for the second-round game.
When contacted about the issue, Aiken head coach Tony Harrell had no comment. South Aiken failed to qualify for the playoffs, so Rich, a junior, can't be punished with the loss of playing time this season.
