They’re your Dreamgirls, and they are coming to Augusta in hopes of making local audiences happy in May.
Tickets to see the award-winning musical “Dreamgirls” on May 28 at 7:30 p.m. are on sale now.
The show will take place at the Bell Auditorium on 712 Telfair St. in Augusta. Tickets are $40, $45 and $50, with group rates available. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.
“Dreamgirls” starts as the Dreams – Deena Jones played by Jasmin Richardson, Effie Melody White played by Charity Dawson and Lorrell Robinson played by Mary Searcy – are trying to make it big when they wind up singing back-up for big-name James “Thunder” Early, played by Michael Jahlil. Conflicts and jealously start to arise amongst the girls as they try to make it in the music world they long to be in.
Other key characters include Effie’s brother C.C. White played by Terrance Johnson, the Dreams’ manager Curtis Taylor Jr. played by Aubrey Poo, Early’s manager Marty played by Kolby Kindle, Early’s producer Wayne played by Cameron J. Ross and Effie’s replacement Michelle Morris played by Kimberly Michelle Thomas.
Robert Longbottom is the touring show’s director and choreographer with set designer Robin Wagner and costume designer William Ivey Long. The tour is produced by Big League Productions.
The musical premiered in December 1981 and has won six Tony awards and two Grammy awards since then. Hit numbers from the show include “And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going,” “One Night Only” and “Listen.”
Original books and lyrics are by Tony and Grammy award winner Tom Eyen.
Placed in the ’60s, the show is loosely based on the ups and downs of Diana Ross and The Supremes.
A film adaptation of the musical was released in 2006 with Beyoncé Knowles as Deena, Jennifer Hudson as Effie, Anika Noni Rose Lorrell, Eddie Murphy as Early and Jamie Foxx as Curtis, with Bill Cordon as the director and writer.
