The Aiken Masterworks Chorale is gearing up for its Valentine Serenade fundraiser.

The program, which will be held Saturday, will include the Masterworks Chorale and the USC Aiken Concert Choir under the direction of Joel Scraper. In addition, the duo of violinist Jonathan Aceto and pianist Martin David Jones will perform numbers from Schubert, Richard Strauss, Beethoven and more.

“The ensemble has evolved over the years as we have adapted to different directors,” said chorale member and past president Lorraine Ray. “Both the era of Dr. Sandra Field and of Dr. Joel Scraper have been satisfying and productive. Our Valentine’s event has been happening for about 12 years, and it’s our big fundraiser. Plus, it’s a gala, celebrative event,” she said.

“Some years we’ve performed opera, musical theater, tunes of the ’50s; other years it’s been pop standards,” Ray explained. “This year marks a return to elegance, with more classical, but very accessible, romantic love songs. The chorale will be singing in English, French and Spanish, and we’ll have special guest artists including violin, piano, and the golden voices of the USC Aiken Concert Choir.”

“The songs we’re doing this Saturday prove that music is the universal language of love,” said chorale member Tom Dick. “Delicious food, lovely music and champagne – where else would you rather be this Saturday night?”

The Valentine Serenade will be held Saturday at the Aiken Center for the Arts, on the second floor in the Brown Pavilion. Doors will open at 7:30 p.m. with entertainment starting at 8 p.m.

Refreshments of champagne and non-alcoholic drinks, hors d’oeuvres and desserts will be served. Tickets are $25, but seating is limited. For more information, call Doris Hoffman at 643-8047.
