An Aiken man was indicted on charges of murder in Richmond County this week for allegedly shooting and killing a family member inside University Hospital in October, according to court records.
Charles Gorrell, of Sudlow Lake Road, was indicted on Tuesday by a grand jury on charges of felony murder, malice murder and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime.
Authorities have said Gorrell, 86, brought a pistol into his wife’s hospital room and shot his nephew, 59-year-old Tim Grooms, on Oct. 16.
Court and law enforcement officials in Augusta threw together a bond hearing on short notice in November, amid reports that a “gravely ill” Gorrell was released from the hospital and sent back into the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office custody at the detention center in Augusta.
A Superior Court judge denied Gorrell’s original request for bond on Nov. 1.
The motion to reconsider Gorrell’s bond said his health had declined rapidly in the past month.
Detention center officials said at the bond hearing that their medical facilities are not capable of handling a patient with Gorrell’s needs.
