Man dies after car strikes his motorcycle

A 51-year-old Augusta man died after his motorcycle was struck by a vehicle that disregarded a traffic signal on Highway 1 on Tuesday, according to the Aiken County Coroner’s Office.

The accident happened just 6:40 p.m., according to a statement.

Berry Playford, of Parkway Drive in Augusta, was traveling south on Highway 1 on his 2012 Honda motorcycle when a 2011 Dodge Charger traveling south on Old Aiken Road disregarded a traffic signal at the intersection of Old Aiken Road and Highway 1, according to the statement. The vehicle struck Playford’s motorcycle.

The driver of the Charger was not injured, according to the statement. Playford was transported to Georgia Health Sciences University, where he died several hours later from multiple body trauma.

The crash remains under investigation by the S.C. Highway Patrol. Toxicology results are pending.
