Law firm collecting prom dresses for Cinderella Project
Prom is one of the most special nights in a teenage girl’s life and the local chapter of the S.C. Bar Association Young Lawyers Division is making sure area students are dressed for the occasion.
The Cinderella Project, which offers formal dresses to students who cannot afford to purchase one themselves, was started at a state level and this is the eighth year the local Young Lawyers Division chapter has been involved.
Christy Tyner, an attorney with Maxwell Law Firm who is the Aiken division chair for the event, said they are currently taking donations of clean, in-style dresses of all sizes to give to those students. She said, typically, they have 250 to 300 dresses on the racks and approximately 100 girls will show up for the boutique that’s held in March.
Currently, a room on the second floor of the Maxwell Law firm is filled with dresses left over from last year’s boutique. Tyner said they like to have a lot of variety in styles, colors and sizes so each girl can find that perfect evening gown which they can take home at no cost.
“You can tell when they find the right dress,” Tyner said. “They’re twirling around and don’t want to take it off. It’s a lot of fun.”
Tyner said it’s a worthwhile cause because it helps build the self-esteem of these girls and makes them feel like a princess for that one night.
Donations of dresses will be accepted Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at either 225 Chesterfield St. in Aiken or 516 West Ave. in North Augusta. Jewelry, evening bags, shoes, unused make up and other accessories can also be donated.
The actual boutique will be held March 2 from 9 a.m. to noon at the Maxwell Law Firm. Students from all area schools are invited and must bring their student ID.
