Auditions for Aiken’s county-wide boys choir, Bound to Sing, will be held at the First Baptist Church of Aiken in the choir room today from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m.
The men’s choir South Boundary and the youth directors are seeking boys with unchanged voices in fourth through sixth grades. The initial rehearsal and performance session began last September.
Program leaders James Bennett, Kathleen Cartledge and Bill Riehl will conduct the auditions. Bennett and Cartledge are the music ministers, respectively, of First Baptist Church and St. Paul Lutheran Church. Riehl serves as South Boundary’s music director.
They are looking for boys with a good ear for music. Learning about sight reading and music theory are part of the project, but these are not considered prerequisites. There is no cost for the audition, but boys accepted into the choir will pay a tuition fee of $50 per semester. They will be responsible for rehearsal attendance and a simple uniform of khaki trousers and a polo shirt.
Rehearsals at First Baptist will begin on Jan. 29 from 3:50 to 5:15 p.m. and will continue each Tuesday at that time through May.
The boys will make an appearance at Hopelands Gardens on May 13 with South Boundary, concluding the performance season.
“We believe that rehearsing and performing with peers and with adults are both powerful parts of this project,” Riehl said. “We expect to produce a professionally recorded CD in late May.”
The first term for Bound to Sing concluded with a successful concert at First Baptist Church. The boys prepared a program of spirituals, Christmas songs, rounds and sea chanteys. They presented the program with the school choirs comprising the South Boundary Boys Choirs of Aiken County choral project. Those school choirs are the Boundary Boys from Chukker Creek Elementary School and No Boundaries from East Aiken School of the Arts.
